STEMcx wins EXPLORAVISION!

The team, coached by teacher Madhu Wijesinghe, a science teacher at James McHenry Ems created the 'Insta-Freeze Waste Eliminator,' based on their concerns about eliminating food waste for the future of the environment. The team's mentor was a volunteer, Hannah Haller, from STEMcx. STEMcx also provided scientific and technical expertise.

In the next phase of competition, the winning regional teams will be asked to create posters, videos and a prototype to communicate and exhibit their ideas to the public. *I am so thrilled to see an opportunity to start STEM education for the youngest of our Baltimore youth.

This competition has made science and technology exciting at an all-new level, said Mrs. Wijesinghe. "It is also heartwarming to witness the level of heart and dedication of our Baltimore City parents, as our parents are integral to our young people's academic excellence."

The team will now advance to the national phase of the competition, where participants will have a chance to win $10,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bonds (at maturity) and other great prizes. For their regional win, the team members and the coach will each receive a Chrome book, a regional certificate, and a regional banner to use at a virtual school ceremony in April, where a Toshiba representative will formally recognize the team for their creativity and accomplishments.

“I am extremely PROUD of Keegan, Anthony, and Ms. Wijesinghe. Ms. W has taken this opportunity to lead our young scientist by giving her personal time, coaching, and support to ensure that learning happens beyond the classroom. The parents have encouraged their children's dreams." said James McHenry principal Denita Plain "Keegan and Anthony have worked hard and are passionate about becoming change agents in the science field. Our entire school community is proud of the team. We have our fingers crossed and hope that the students can bring home the Grand Prize!
